Common Injuries in Jet Ski Accidents

JetSki2

Jet skiing is a great way to enjoy Florida’s waterways. Unfortunately, jet skiing can also result in very serious accidents that result in severe injuries. Jet skiers have very little protection when they are on the water. With little more than a life vest, jet skiers are very vulnerable. Below, our Florida jet ski accident attorney explains the very serious injuries sustained in these crashes.

Traumatic Brain Injuries

There are a number of ways people suffer traumatic brain injuries during a jet ski accident. You may hit your head on the jet ski, the side of a boat, or on a natural object such as a rock. If you are thrown from your jet ski, you may also suffer a fall from a significant height and your head can become injured from the impact if you hit the ground or water.

Amputations

Amputations can and do occur when two JetSkis collide or a JetSki collides with a vessel or fixed object. JetSkis do not have brakes, and many JetSkis do not have steering when the throttle is not engaged.  Therefore, if the object you are trying to avoid is in front of you, releasing the throttle will mean the JetSki continues in the same direction as it last had thrust.

Broken Bones

The force of a jet ski accident is great and your bones may not be able to withstand the impact. Any number of bones can become broken during a jet ski accident including your legs, arms, facial bones, and more.

Spinal Cord Injuries

Your spinal cord does not have to be directly hit to suffer an injury, although hitting your head or falling on your back can cause these types of injuries, as well. Additionally, the very force of the crash can cause your spinal cord to become injured.

Drowning

Clearly, drowning is one of the most common and serious injuries suffered in jet ski accidents. Even when people survive a near drowning, their brain can suffer from a lack of oxygen if they are underwater for an extended period of time. This can result in brain damage, which will impact accident victims for the rest of their life.
